This variable represents a number of weeks trying to become pregnant except for the following codes:
90 = None of the above
95 = Not interviewed (female questionnaire)
96 = Not interviewed (household questionnaire)
97 = Don't know
98 = No response or missing
99 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
PREGTRYPANELWEEK reports how long the woman had been trying to become pregnant in weeks for the birth that occurred since the last panel survey interview. Her response was recorded in terms of years (PREGTRYPANELYEAR), months (PREGTRYPANELMON), and weeks. If the woman reported trying for one, two, or three years, the interviewer was instructed to probe for an exact number of months. The range of possible values for years was 0 to 40, the range of possible values for months was 0 to 12, and the range of possible values for weeks was 0 to 5.
If the respondent reported trying for less than one month, the interviewer was instructed to ask her to specify the number of weeks. If she just started trying this week, the interviewer was instructed to enter "1" week. For any response 1 month or greater, the interviewer was instructed to enter "0" for weeks.
