Description
EAID reports the geographic enumeration area where the respondent was located. The EAID is the primary sampling unit for IPUMS PMA. Due to privacy concerns, the borders of these enumeration areas are not publicly available and the enumeration area is specified via an assigned number rather than a recognized name for a locale.
Enumeration areas do not cover all areas within each survey country. After 5 survey rounds using the same enumeration areas, PMA identifies new enumeration areas. Due to this sampling design, some households, eligible women respondents, or service delivery points might be selected to be interviewed in more than one survey within a 5 year period. The variables PREVINTERVIEWHQ, PREVINTERVIEWFQ, and PREVINTERVIEWSQ identify household, female, and service delivery point respondents, respectively, who have been interviewed for PMA in a previous round. It is not possible, however, to link survey records for the same person between rounds.
Comparability
For Nigerian samples, the individual enumeration areas from the most recent national census did not contain enough households for PMA to sample from, so adjacent clusters of enumeration areas were used for sampling, to reach a threshold of 200 households.
Starting in 2019, EAID changed from 4 or 5 digit codes to 8 or 9 digits codes.
