Description

FPPROVIDER reports where the woman first received her recent or current family planning method. FPPROVIDER retains all detail from country-specific response categories. A general version of this variable can be found in FPPROVIDERGEN.

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.

Comparability

Each country's questionnaire included some different possible responses given different cultural and infrastructure contexts. Categories sharing the same first digit are largely comparable.

For earlier samples, each questionnaire asked, "Where did you obtain your (MOST RECENT / CURRENT METHOD) when you started using it?"

In later samples, the question wording was adjusted to include methods obtained by the woman's partner. See the Questionnaire text tab for more details.

There are also universe differences among samples; see the Universe tab for more details.

Comparability with IPUMS-DHS

FPPROVIDER in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the variable FP1METHSRCS in IPUMS-DHS, except that FPPROVIDER contains a higher level of detail. There may be differences in questionnaire text or the variable's universe; see the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
