Description

For women who recently used a method of family planning to delay or avoid pregnancy but are no longer using it, FPSTOPWHY reports the reason why they stopped.

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, FPSTOPWHY is largely comparable across samples. Most commonly, women who used a method of family planning in the last 12 months but were not using at the time of the interview were asked this question. The Congo Democratic Republic Round 1 survey diverged from this standard convention and included women who had ever used family planning but were not using at the time of the interview.

Comparability with IPUMS-DHS

FPSTOPWHY in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the variable FPLDISREAS5Y in IPUMS-DHS. The IPUMS-PMA variable is based on the single, direct question "Why did you stop using your [MOST RECENT METHOD]?" The IPUMS-DHS variable is constructed from a series of questions and utilizes a calendar. Additionally the IPUMS-DHS variable includes women who used and discontinued use of a family planning method in the 5 years prior to the interview, whereas FPSTOPWHY refers to family planning used within the past 12 months. See the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
