Description
For household members who had been enumerated in a longitudinal household survey, HHMEMSTAT reports whether the household member was still a resident of the household in the current phase, and if not, the reason why. The person could have been still a resident, moved away, temporarily away, died, or the interviewer might have been unable to find knowledgeable household members or neighbors to determine that person's status.
The question associated with this variable was included in the household questionnaire.
Comparability
There are slight differences in answer choices between phases (see Questionnaire Text tab for details). Samples from Phases 1 and 2 include a category denoting "Moved out of household for school" that is omitted in samples from Phase 3. In samples from Phase 3, there is a new category denoting "Resident, temporarily not at home".
