Description

PREGENDYR reports the calendar year in which a pregnancy ended for the female respondent or the year in which the female respondent did something to try to end a pregnancy. In Ethiopia 2019, this variable only considered whether the female respondent did anything to try to end a pregnancy, even if the attempt failed. Other samples only considered whether the pregnancy ended in miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth.
Enumerators were instructed to enter the date as either January 1st, 2020 or January 1, 2030 (in later surveys) if the respondent did not give a response to the associated survey question. IPUMS has recoded these cases to "No response or missing."

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.

Comparability

The question wording differs among samples. See Questionnaire text tab for details. The universe of this variable also differs among samples. Longitudinal baseline samples, and the cross-sectional samples derived from them, have a reference period of the extent of the contraceptive calendar, usually 3 years. Some later samples have no reference period limit. See Universe tab for details
