Description
RESIDENT indicates whether the person was a usual member of the household or a visitor. Usual members of the household who did not sleep in the household the previous night were included in the household roster.
The question associated with this variable was included in the household questionnaire. For maternal and newborn health samples, the question was included in the household screening questionnaire and reflects only responses for the infant's mother.
Comparability
In later samples, the information in RESIDENT was derived from two interview questions rather than one. As a result, it is possible that the respondent reported a person in the roster as having slept in the household the previous night, but did not give a response for whether the person was a usual member of the household.
