Description

WATERNUM is a PMA2020-constructed variable that reports the number of water sources the household uses on a regular basis for any part of the year for any household purpose. This count includes only the water sources reported as being used by the household respondent. Households with a value of zero might include true zeros but also persons in households where the respondent did not report any sources.

The question associated with this variable was included in the household questionnaire.

Comparability

In the original data, some samples include missing values or zeros, while others have both. There is no documentation to explain the interpretation of values of zero versus missing in any of these cases. However, using the variable RESULTHQ, it appears that missing values are assigned to WATERNUM when the household questionnaire was not completed, whereas zeros where assigned when household respondents did not report any sources of water.
