Description
FPPROVIDERGEN reports where the woman first received her recent or current family planning method in the general categories of public, private, NGO or other. A related variable, FPPROVIDER, also reports where the woman first received her recent or current family planning method and retains all details from country-specific response categories.
The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.
Comparability
Each country's questionnaire included some country-specific possible responses, given different cultural and infrastructure contexts. However, each country's questionnaire then organized response categories into public, private, NGO (in some countries), and other. Therefore, FPPROVIDERGEN is largely comparable across countries and years.
For earlier samples, each questionnaire asked "Where did you obtain your (MOST RECENT / CURRENT METHOD) when you started using it?"
In later samples, the question wording was adjusted to include methods obtained by the woman's partner. See Questionnaire text tab for more details. There are also universe differences among samples; see the Universe tab for details.
Comparability with IPUMS-DHS
FPPROVIDERGEN in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the variable FP1METHSRCS in IPUMS-DHS, except that FPPROVIDERGEN contains fewer categories. There may be differences in questionnaire text or the variable's universe; see the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
