Since 1992, Ethiopia has been subdivided into regional states, which as of 2004, includes 9 distinct regions and two chartered cities. These regions are based on the area's ethnicity and language, rather than physical geography.

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.

Users may also be interested in BIRTHUR, which indicates whether the woman's birth place is urban or rural.
