Codes and Frequencies
Description
FPEFFECTIVEYRRC reports the most effective family planning method the woman is currently using or used in the last 12 months. The woman is asked which method or methods she is currently using or used in the last 12 months, and is prompted to report more than one if applicable. All of the woman's responses are recorded. For women who are using only one method, that method is coded in FPEFFECTIVEYRRC. For those using multiple methods, the Open Data Kit (ODK) Collect software used by the PMA2020 interviewers automatically determines the most effective method based on a predetermined list of family planning methods. The codes used in this variable replicate this list, with the lower numbers being more effective (e.g., IUDs are more effective than male condoms, and therefore are assigned a lower code).
The variable is a PMA2020 recode of FPEFFECTIVEYR. The woman's response in FPEFFECTIVEYR is recoded for purposes of this variable in the following instances:
Women who reported current use or use in the last 12 months of emergency contraception in FPEFFECTIVEYR are coded as "NIU (not in universe)" in FPEFFECTIVEYRRC.
Additionally, women who reported current use or use in the last 12 months of the Sayana Press injectable contraceptive method are coded into an unspecified "Injectables" category in FPEFFECTIVEYR, but are recoded as "Injectables (Sayana Press)" in FPEFFECTIVEYRRC.
The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.
Comparability
The response categories for FPEFFECTIVEYRRC vary slightly across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-PMA uses composite coding, where the first digit distinguishes between modern methods and traditional methods. The second digit within these broad categories identifies a general subcategory, and the third digit retains detail present in only some samples.
Universe
- Women age 15-49 who used a family planning method to delay or avoid pregancy in the last 12 months, but who are not currently using.
