FPMETHRECSTOPVAL
When stopped using most recent FP method- value

This is a 2-digit variable that represents the time in days, weeks, months, or years since the woman stopped using her most recent family planning method.

90 = Logical edit - missing
95 = Not interviewed (female questionnaire)
96 = Not interviewed (household questionnaire)
99 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

FPMETHRECSTOPVAL, together with FPMETHRECSTOP, indicates the time passed since the woman stopped using her most recent family planning method, if she hasn't used a method in the last 12 months.

Note that the codes in this variable are not reported in a specific unit of time i.e., days, weeks, months, or years. Rather, the unit of time in which the woman responded is reported in FPMETHRECSTOP. Users must use both FPMETHRECSTOPVAL and FPMETHRECSTOP to determine the exact amount of time passed since the woman stopped using her most recent family planning method.

Enumerators were instructed to enter a number for days, weeks, months or years on a screen. However, in some samples, a select number of enumerators recorded specific years, e.g. 2016. We believe these cases were intended to represent the year in which the woman stopped using her most recent family planning method. IPUMS PMA recoded these cases to "Logical edit - missing."

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.
