Description

For women who were not using a family planning method at the time of the interview or pregnant, FPUSPLAN indicates whether they think they will use a method of family planning to delay or avoid pregnancy in the future. For the household and female survey, FPUSPLAN is a combination of the variables FPUSPLAN_PREG and FPUSPLAN_NPREG, which are divided based on the pregnancy status of the woman.

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire and the client exit interview questionnaire.

Comparability

The universe differs slightly across samples. See the Universe tab for details. The response options also vary somewhat across samples. See the Questionnaire text tab for details.

Comparability with IPUMS-DHS

FPUSPLAN in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the variable FPUSPLAN in IPUMS-DHS. The IPUMS-PMA variable is based on the single, direct question "Do you think you will use a contraceptive method to delay or avoid getting pregnant at any time in the future?" The IPUMS-DHS variable is constructed from a series of questions and reports if the woman intends to use, does not intend to use, or is unsure about whether she will use a method of family planning in the future. Additionally, the IPUMS-DHS variable does not exclude women based on their pregnancy status. See the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
