MARSTAT reports the marital status of the respondent of the female questionnaire. Note that for some women who responded to the female questionnaire, MARSTAT might differ from the marital status reported in the household roster (MARSTATHQ), which might have been reported by a fellow household member. Because MARSTAT is reported directly by the individual, it is likely to be more accurate in cases of conflict between MARSTAT and MARSTATHQ.

For India samples, women were able to report that their marital status was currently married, without gauna having been performed. In this harmonized version of marital status, these cases are recoded under "Never married". Gauna signifies a couple moving into the same household.
