Description

MARSTATHQ reports the marital status of individuals in the household, as stated by the household respondent. Users may note that for some cases, MARSTATHQ might differ from the marital status reported by women in the household who were eligible for the female questionnaire (MARSTAT). Because MARSTAT is reported directly by the individual, it is likely to be more accurate in cases of conflict between MARSTATHQ and MARSTAT.

Comparability

For India samples, women could be reported as their marital status was currently married, without gauna having been performed. In this harmonized version of marital status, these cases are recoded under "Never married". Gauna signifies a couple moving into the same household.
