Description
TIMEMENSTRUATEDAY reports the number of days since the woman's last menstrual period.
The information in TIMEMENSTRUATEDAY is constructed from TIMEMENSTRUATE, which reports a specific unit of time i.e., days, weeks, months, or years, and TIMEMENSTRUATEVAL, which reports the specific number of days, weeks, months, or years since the woman's last period.
Users should note that for women whose response was originally recorded in months, their response was multiplied by 30 to estimate the number of days in each of those months, thus not taking into account months that do not have 30 days. Additionally, for women whose response was originally recorded in years, their response was multiplied by 365 to estimate the number of days in each of those years, thus not taking into account leap years.
Enumerators were instructed to code the amount of time since the woman's last menstrual period. However, in some samples, a select number of enumerators recorded specific years, e.g. 2010. We believe these cases were intended to represent the year in which the woman's last menstrual cycle occurred. IPUMS-PMA previously recoded these cases to "Logical edit - missing." These cases now have been recoded by subtracting the recorded response from the year of the interview and by multiplying this number by 365 to estimate the number of days since the woman's last menstrual cycle.

There are no comparability issues.
Comparability with IPUMS-DHS
TIMEMENSTRUATEDAY is similar to TIMEMENSTRUATE in IPUMS-DHS. While TIMEMENSTRUATEDAY reports the number of days since the woman's last menstrual period, TIMEMENSTRUATE in IPUMS-DHS reports the time since the woman's last period in days, weeks, months, or years. Additionally, there may be differences in questionnaire text or the variable's universe; see the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
