This is a 5-digit variable that represents the time (in days, weeks, months, or years) since the woman's last menstrual period, except for the following codes:
90000 = Logical edit - missing
99995 = Not interviewed (female questionnaire)
99996 = Not interviewed (household questionnaire)
99997 = Don't know
99998 = No response or missing
99999 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
TIMEMENSTRUATEVAL, together with TIMEMENSTRUATE, reports the time passed since the woman's last menstrual period.
Note that the codes in this variable are not reported in a specific unit of time i.e., days, weeks, months, or years. Rather, the unit of time in which the woman responded is reported in TIMEMENSTRUATE. Users must use both TIMEMENSTRUATEVAL and TIMEMENSTRUATE to determine the exact amount of time since the woman last menstrual period.
Enumerators were instructed to code the amount of time since the woman's last menstrual period. However, in some samples, a select number of enumerators recorded specific years, e.g. 2010. We believe these cases were intended to represent the year in which the woman's last menstrual cycle occurred. IPUMS-PMA previously recoded these cases to "Logical edit - missing." These cases now have been recoded by subtracting the recorded response from the year of the interview to estimate when the woman's last menstrual cycle occurred.
The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.
Comparability
There are no comparability issues.
Comparability with IPUMS-DHS
TIMEMENSTRUATEVAL, together with TIMEMENSTRUATE, can be used to create a variable similar to TIMEMENSTRUATE in IPUMS-DHS. There may be differences in questionnaire text or the variable's universe; see the Survey Text and Universe Tab of the IPUMS-DHS variable for more information.
Universe
- Women aged 15-49 except those who are menopausal, whose last period was before their last birth, or who have never menstruated.
