Description
FPCURREFFMETH reports the most effective family planning method the woman is currently using. The woman is asked which method or methods she is currently using, and is prompted to report more than one if applicable. All of the woman's responses are recorded. For women who are using only one method, that method is coded in FPCURREFFMETH. For those using multiple methods, the Open Data Kit (ODK) Collect software used by the PMA interviewers automatically determines the most effective method based on a predetermined list of family planning methods. The codes used in this variable replicate this list, with the lower numbers being more effective (e.g., IUDs are more effective than male condoms, and therefore are assigned a lower code).
The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire and the maternal and newborn health baseline survey.
Comparability
The response categories for FPCURREFFMETH vary slightly across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-PMA uses composite coding, where the first digit distinguishes between modern methods and traditional methods. The second digit within these broad categories identifies a general subcategory, and the third digit retains detail present in only some samples. The universe also differs among samples. Comparability with IPUMS-DHS
FPCURREFFMETH in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the variable FPMETHNOW, which reports the contraceptive method the woman is currently using, in IPUMS-DHS. For women who report multiple methods in FPMETHNOW, interviewers are instructed to follow the skip patterns for the more effective method based on a predetermined list of family planning methods. IPUMS-PMA users should note the two variables do not use the same codes, and the coding scheme in the IPUMS-DHS variable does not reflect a given method's effectiveness.
