Description

For India samples only, MARSTATIN reports the marital status of the respondent of the female questionnaire. Users may note that for some women who responded to the female questionnaire, MARSTATIN might differ from the marital status reported in the household roster (MARSTATHQIN), which might have been reported by a fellow household member.

MARSTATIN differs from the variable MARSTAT in that some women are identified as being married, but the gauna ritual (indicating the start of cohabitation) in India has not been performed. For the purposes of understanding need for family planning, this status is more similar to not being married.
