This is a 4-digit variable that represents the number of months the woman would like to wait before the birth of a/another child in months or years, except for the following codes:

9990 = Logical edit
9995 = Not interviewed (female questionnaire)
9996 = Not interviewed (household questionnaire)
9997 = Don't know
9998 = No response or missing
9999 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

PREFTIMECHMONTH reports the number of months the woman would like to wait before the birth of a/another child.

The information in PREFTIMECHMONTH is constructed from PREFTIMECH and PREFTIMECHPREG, which report a specific unit of time i.e., months or years; and PREFTIMECHVAL, which reports the specific number of months or years the woman would like to wait before a/another birth.

Users should note that for women whose response was originally recorded in years, their response was multiplied by 12 to estimate the number of months. For women whose response was originally recorded in months, their response was not changed.

Enumerators were instructed to code the total number of months or years the woman would like to wait until a/another birth. However, in some samples, a select number of enumerators recorded specific years, e.g. 2017. We believe these cases were intended to represent the year in which the woman would like her next birth to occur. IPUMS-PMA recoded these cases in PREFTIMECHVAL by subtracting the year of the interview from the recorded response. Additionally, in PREFTIMECHMONTH, these cases have been recoded by subtracting the year of the interview from the recorded response and by multiplying this number by 12 to estimate the number of months the women would like to wait until a/another birth.

The question associated with this variable was included in the female questionnaire.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, there are no comparability issues.
