Description
PERSONID is an IPUMS-constructed variable that uniquely identifies individuals in household and female files across all samples. PERSONID is a concatenation of the IPUMS-constructed variable HHID, a variable that uniquely identifies households, and LINENO, which is the person's reference number within the household.
Comparability
For Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo samples when the same survey round is split into two samples by geographic region (for example, Nigeria 2015 Round 2), an additional digit was added to both HHID and PERSONID so that these variables uniquely identify households and individuals.
Comparability with IPUMS-DHS
PERSONID in IPUMS-PMA is similar to the IPUMS-DHS variable CASEID, a sample-specific unique identifier for each woman in a given DHS sample year. CASEID is generally created by The DHS Program as a concatenation of the variables CLUSTERNO (sample cluster), HHNUM (household number), and LINENO (person's number within the household). A second IPUMS-DHS variable, IDHSPID, uniquely identifies persons across all samples, by concatenating the variables SAMPLE and CASEID.
